Redevelopment agencies face elimination

The Glendale Redevelopment Agency is preparing for war and a worst-case scenario in the wake of passage by state lawmakers of a budget that could eliminate local redevelopment agencies.

Lawmakers voted late Tuesday night to kill all 400-plus redevelopment agencies in California as of Oct. 1 unless they agree to reroute billions of dollars to schools and local governments. The measure was a trailer bill attached to the state budget.

If redevelopment agencies sign up for the alternative, they would be required to give back a combined $1.7 billion in revenue for the 2011-12 budget year, which starts Friday, and $400 million every year thereafter. Agencies that agree to the deal will retain control over some of the tax revenue they receive, while those who don’t will be ordered not to launch any new projects, spending or borrowing. NEWS-PRESS

Triple-degree heat expected over the holiday weekend

Image: National Weather Service

A high pressure system moving over the Southland could push weekend temperatures into the triple digits, creating dangerous conditions for fire and heat stroke, officials warned.

Temperatures in the greater Burbank and Glendale areas could reach 102 degrees by Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, and then 103 by Independence Day through Tuesday.

Combine that with dried out brush that popped up during an above-average rainy season, and the conditions for sparking tinder dry vegetation over the Fourth of July weekend are set, officials say.

Los Angeles County public health officials this week also warned people to keep their pets indoors as much as possible, and to keep an eye on elderly neighbors who may be more susceptible to the effects of high temperatures.

SEEING STARS: Burbank is the best walking town!

Now that the weather is finally warm, there’s nothing better than taking an evening walk.

One of the best things about living at Avalon in Burbank is the opportunity for walking. In addition to a pretty strict diet, I attribute my 30lb weight loss over the last year to walking my dogs three times per day, everyday. The area in downtown Burbank is perfect for walking day or night.

My two adorable black Pomeranians are now apartment dogs, which means no backyard. We have a small porch that has an emergency potty pad area but I had to actually learn their elimination habits, that I had previously not thought about in San Jose. They had a doggie door, backyard and they went outside when they wanted to. Read more…
